USA Today reports that the Nintendo Wii is the clear leader in video game console sales for the month of January. A study of the top game consoles and games in January by the NPD group shows the Wii leading the way with over 436,000 units sold in January. It is not surprising that the same trend is mirrored for video game console sales on eBay. The top three in video game consoles on eBay are the Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3, and the Microsoft Xbox, but the Nintendo Wii outperformed both the Xbox and PlayStation 3 in January with a total of 28,694 units sold and a sell-through rate of 93%. That’s a whopping 17,686 units more and a sell-through rate 9% higher than its closest competitor, the Microsoft Xbox!
The main reason for this landslide lead is the Wii’s motion sensing controller. This feature adds a new flavor to familiar games for older gamers and a totally new level of interactivity for newly released games created specifically with this technology in mind. It’s hard to imagine sales for the Nintendo Wii falling off given this factor.
The thought of renewing old video game loves or entering a whole new level of game play will continue to attract new buyers into the market throughout 2007. Sellers should really keep this in mind as the trend of youth electronics continues its upward boom this year.
At $328, the average final value of the Wii (new and used) on eBay remains nearly $80 higher than a brand new Wii’s retail value of $249. But the fact that the Wii is still next to impossible to find at local or online retail stores like Bestbuy and Target adds to the growing number of buyers who are looking for Wii’s on eBay. Walmart has it in stock, but will only sell it as a bundle with games and accessories costing buyers over $600 in all.
So sellers, keep your eye out for new or used Wii’s from both local shops and your inventory sources. Don’t hesitate to jump on the chance to pick up as many Wii’s you can possibly find. You’ll be glad you did.
